This scholarship was created to remember Karen, a resident of Austin, TX., who was a wife, mother, daughter and “Glamma” to her adorable grandson. Karen earned her wings at the age of 58 years old on June 1, 2020, after courageously fighting against metastatic breast cancer for eight years.
The scholarship was created by Karen’s family to preserve her memory and to support the education of college students with financial need. It is available to eligible African American, college-bound, high school seniors and current college students whose lives have been affected by breast cancer – either personally or as a caregiver. Multiple scholarship awards will be given in the amount of $2,000 each, paid directly to the college or university to help defray the student’s tuition and other educational expenses.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have a family member diagnosed with and/or actively treated for breast cancer.
- High school applicants must provide proof of an acceptance letter from a college or university.
- College applicants must be pursuing an Associate degree or higher.
- All applicants must provide a current high school or college transcript. (Transcript may be a copy from an online website).
- Applicants must provide one letter of recommendation and a 500-word essay.
ALL documents must be submitted by Monday, May 16, 2022. All scholarship award recipients will be notified via email by the end of day on May 27, 2022.
Please forward this information widely to all students who would be interested. We are looking forward to hearing from as many qualified students as possible!
